Daniel H. "Fatso" Petrella

Daniel H. "Fatso" Petrella, age 92, a lifelong resident of Dover, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015, in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.

Born January 31, 1923, he was a son of the late John and Edith (Sabatina) Petrella. Although never heavy, he was given the nickname "Fatso" by neighborhood kids when he was a little boy and the name stuck. Fatso graduated from Dover High School where he was a well-known football player. He served honorably with the U.S. Navy during the Second World War, much of his duty spent as a naval escort on U.S. cargo ships. Following his discharge, Fatso went to work for the Union Camp Chemical Company at Dover, retiring in 1985. He married the former Frances M. Enama on July 11, 1953 and he and Frances just celebrated sixty-two years of marriage.

Fatso was a member of St. Joseph Church at Dover. One of his favorite pastimes was that of carving walking sticks and canes for family and friends and which he also sold at local craft shows.

In addition to his loving wife, Frances, Fatso is survived by his daughter, Julia McMurray of Dover; his son, Daniel (Sandy) Petrella of New Philadelphia; his two grandchildren, Laura (James Kurtz) Petrella and Rev. Jay (Erin) Petrella; his great-grandchildren, Quaden and Caius Kurtz, and Aiden Petrella; and his several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Fatso was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Dan McMurray; his sister, Carmie Petrella; and his brothers, Vince and John Petrella.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Fr. Jimmy Hatfield officiating.
