Daniel W. "Dan" Marshall, age 84, of Dover, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at Park Village Health Care Center, Dover, from Alzheimer's Disease.
Born September 22 1931, in Dover, he was the son of the late John R. and Wilma Lahmers Marshall.
Dan graduated from Dover High School in 1949 and went on to serve honorably with the U.S. Army during the Korean War attaining the rank of sergeant.
He married the former Donna Shumaker, his best friend and love of his life, on September 14, 1952. The couple celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary this past year.
In addition to his wife, Donna, Dan is survived by his children, Kim Swan of Strasburg, Denny (Judy) Marshall of Dover, Scott (Peggy) Marshall of New Philadelphia, Nancy (John) Freshwater of Dover and Maryjane (Dave) Garan of Strasburg; his grandchildren, Bryan and Brenna Swan, Christopher and Justin Marshall, Josh, Shawn, and Kyle Marshall, Luke, Sarah and Jordan Freshwater and Nick and Michael Garan; his great grandchildren Madilyn and William Marshall and Lucy and Cooper Marshall and Kensi Freshwater he loved time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Dick (Mary) Marshall; his sister-in-law, Pat Marshall; his niece, Sue (Marlin) Schlabach; his great niece, Morgan Schlabach; and his cousin, Marge Lindberg. Dan and Donna were also foster parents for the Tuscarawas County Department of Human Services over the years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Tom Brister; and his brother, David Marshall.
Dan was proud of the fact that he was the first man hired by United Parcel Service in this area of Ohio in 1957. After earning an award for thirty years of safe driving he retired from UPS in May 1987. He was then employed by the Village of Sugarcreek until he again retired in 1992.His infectious and irrepressible humor and spontaneous wit endeared him to his colleagues and friends.
He was a long-time member of the Sugarcreek Church of the Brethren. Dan was an avid model railroader, and an animal-lover, enjoying his and Donna's horses and many rescued dogs and cats.
Honoring Dan's wishes, he will be cremated. His family will greet guests Sunday, May 15, 12:30-1:30 p.m., in the Sugarcreek Church of the Brethren (behind Garaway High School). A celebration of Dan's life will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the church, officiated by his brother, Pastor Dick Marshall. Refreshments will be served after the service.
