Dario "Dab" Cardani, 90, of New Philadelphia passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 following an extended illness.
Born February 3, 1921, in Wainwright, Ohio he was the son of the late Emilio and Giovannina Cardani. He graduated from Tusky High School in 1938. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a member of the Reconnaissance Troop of the 44th Infantry Division.
Dab worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for two years and drove buses for the Dover-Phila Transit for 10 years, which is where he met his wife, Dorothy Contini. He also worked for two years at the Borden Dairy and retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company after 30 years. He was an LUTC instructor for many years.
Father Cletus married Dab and Dorothy on June 25, 1947 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover, where he was a member. Dab was also member of the Dover Knights of Columbus and the Dover VFW.
Dab loved people. He will be remembered for his caring nature and he enjoyed lending a helping hand and telling jokes. He loved playing cards, fishing, watching sports, golfing, and bowling. He played baseball for the Wainwright Red Birds, Sandy Valley, and the Dover Merchants. He was inducted into the Tuscarawas County Baseball Hall of Fame and was a member of the Tuscarawas County All Stars.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he will be sadly missed by his children; Dan (Nancy) Cardani of Richmond, VA, Diane (Cornelius) Zandstra of Auburn CA; grandchildren, Michael and Jeff Cardani of Richmond, VA, Chad and Corianne Zandstra of Auburn, CA; along with several nieces and nephews.
His sister, Mary Caravati, precedes him in death.
A funeral mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 11:00 am with Father Matt Hoover officiating. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in New Philadelphia where the Dover VFW will conduct military honors. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at the Family Life Center across the street from the church. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 4-7 pm. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at 6:45 pm. Following calling hours, cremation will take place.
