David A. Thompson

David A. Thompson, 84, of Dover walked into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the Community Hospice Truman House.

Born on May 12, 1934 in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Charles and Anelite (Affolter) Thompson. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Jeremy Gintz; and his in-laws, Chester and Pauline Haas.

David graduated from Dover High School with the Class of 1952. He honorably and proudly served in both the United States Army and the Navy. On July 29, 1956 he married the love of his life, Shirley Haas, who survives.

He worked for Timken Roller Bearing for 11 years and later retired from Reeves Steel Mill (Armco) in Dover in 1993 following 33 years of service as a foreman of maintenance.

In addition to Shirley, he will be sadly missed by his son; Scott Thompson (Greg Tyillian) of Largo, FL; his daughter, Patricia (Andy) Gintz of Dover; daughter in-law, Chris Thompson of Dover; along with his “adopted son”, Phil Beatty of Mesick, MI.
four grandchildren; Joshua (Kelly) Gintz of Dover, Jordan (Andrea) Gintz of Dover, Amy Gintz of Leesburg, GA, Nathan (Jenna) Thompson of Mounds View, MN, Ben (Katelin) Thompson of Warsaw, IN; four great-grandchildren; Sailor Gintz, Hunter Gintz, Gwendolyn and Vera Thompson; his brother, Robert (Fran) Thompson of Port Orange, Florida; sister, Barbara (Jim) Domer of Dover.

David was an active member of the First Moravian Church in Dover where he was on the Board of Elders, a youth leader, and taught Sunday School for many years. He was the camp manager for Camp Zimmerman for seven years and for Camp Tar Hollow for four years. David was also a representative of the District Provincial Synod of the Moravian Church. David and Shirley wintered in Florida for the past 19 years, while there, he was an active at Lake Gibson Nazarene Church. He also served on the Tuscarawas County YMCA Board of Directors, and was active with the YMCA Men’s Club, Indian Guides, and the swim team. David was a volunteer fireman for Dover for many years. He was an avid golfer and Ohio sports fan, especially the Buckeyes.

In honoring David’s wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. A memorial visitation will take place on at the Dover funeral home on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 from 4-7 pm. A memorial service will be held at the first Moravian Church in Dover on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 11 am with Pastor John Wallace officiating. Friends can call one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A meal will be served in the church social hall following the service. Burial will take place at a later date at Ohio Western Reserve in Rittman, Ohio.
