David G. “Spike” Antonelli, age 80, of Dover, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, February 8, 2022.
Born April 25, 1941, in Dover, he was a son of the late Carmen and Victoria Toth Antonelli. Spike attended Dover High School and went on to serve honorably with the United States Army, much of that time in Korea. On November 27, 1965, he married the former Bonita L. “Bonnie” Carruthers, who survives - the couple were married for 56 years. Spike was a hard-worker. He was employed by Dover’s Greer Steel Company for 32 years. He was a skilled stonemason, having worked on the Rathskeller in Zoar, and he was also a cobbler, working with Joe Ricklic at Joe’s Shoe Repair in New Philadelphia - a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
Spike was a member of St. Joseph Church, Dover, and Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, New Philadelphia. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing bocce, golf and cards, as well as gardening and watching the birds around his home.
In addition to his loving wife, Bonnie, Spike is survived by his children, Betty Jane “B.J.” (David “Abe” Oyer) Antonelli of Louisville, and David (Rae Ann) Antonelli of Dover; his grandchildren, Allison (Kevin) Knotts, Phillip Fischio, Michael and Rian Antonelli; his siblings, Edith Reichman, Martha and Joseph (Beverly) Antonelli; and his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Spike was preceded in death by his baby sister, Sylvia Antonelli.
Honoring Spike’s wishes, he will be cremated through the care of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. A private family committal service will be held in St. Joseph Calvary Cemetery. To sign an online guestbook and share a fond memory of Spike, please visit the Obituaries link on the funeral home’s website.
The family suggests that contributions in Spike’s memory be made to either the Disabled American Veterans or the Tuscarawas County Humane Society.
