David L. Crowl, 71, of Dover died on February 3, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born November 22, 1938 in Minerva, he was the son of the late Harold M. and Eva M. Dutton Crowl. David graduated from Minerva High School in 1956. He attended Ohio University. He also took classes in the US Army Language School while he was in the military. He started his military career in U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for 18 months and later joined the United States Army. He was a cryptologist and linguist for the Vietnamese and was part of the Branch of Intelligence ASA. He was honorably discharged on March 27, 1960. He married the love of his life, Darlene Wallace, on June 20, 1981. Darlene and David co-owned the former Crowl Investigation and Security Services in Marietta from 1986 until 2002.
He loved golfing, playing cards, and was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. David and Darlene were active with the Pioneer City Friends of Greyhounds in Marietta. Together they found homes for 207 retired racers. He and Darlene personally adopted five of them, four of which have gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Wandy Woo is still at home with Darlene.
He will be sadly missed by his two daughters; Denise J. (husband, David) Bowsher of Findlay, Brenda L. (husband, Eugene, "Yogi") Grasselli of New Philadelphia; his step-son, David Wallace of Dover; his step-daughter, Shawn R. Tylke (and her companion, John Hamilton) of Canal Fulton; his grandchildren, Eric and Kyle Bowsher both of Findlay, Santi and Nicole Grasselli of New Philadelphia, Steven L. Tylke of Dennison, Brittany Smeyres of Massillon, Jimmy Kaser of Canal Fulton, David (wife, Amanda) Wallace of Kimbolton, and Rachael Wallace of Dover; eight great-grandchildren; his three brothers, Robert H. (wife, Doris) Crowl of North Carolina, Clyde W. (wife, Sabra Jo) Crowl of North Carolina, Francis L. (wife, Margery) Crowl of Minerva; and his special friends, Sue Gamba of Dover and Atty. David Hipp of New Philadelphia; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his two sisters; Helen E. Czerpak and Theresa J. Brim and an infant brother, Henry Clark Crowl.
In honoring David's wishes, cremation will take place at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date with Pastor Brian Flood officiating.
