Dean O. Zurcher, 88, of Dover died Saturday, March 15, 2008 surrounded by his family.
Born August 18, 1919 in York Township, he was the son of the late Oswald and Marie Adeline Schlafly Zurcher.
Dean graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1937 and later married his wife, Edna Pershing Zurcher, on June 13, 1944.
After 41 years, Dean retired from the former Reeve's Steel in Dover. He was a member of the Steel Workers of America Retiree's (S.O.A.R).
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Strasburg. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He volunteered at the Wilderness center and was a member of the Pine Hill Hunting Club in Dover. He was also a former assistant Boy Scout leader. He truly enjoyed playing board games and taking walks to the park with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were very special to him.
In addition to his wife other survivors include: two daughters, Marla (husband, Dan) Ledsome of Dover, Nancy (husband, Charles) Findley of Gentry, Missouri; a Daughter-in-law, Lisa Zurcher of Mineral City; five grandchildren, Lori (husband, Jim) Burdette, and Lisa Jaberg both of Dover, Kyle Findley of Afghanistan, Jennifer Findley of Gentry Missouri, Russell Zurcher of Mineral City; two step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Dean is preceded in death by his son; Ronald Zurcher and two sisters; Eunice Avon and Bernice Winkler.
A celebration of Dean's life will take place at the First Lutheran Church in Strasburg on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11:00 am with Pastor Steve Woyen officiating. Burial will follow at Dover Burial Park. A meal will follow in the church fellowship hall. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 5-8 pm.
