Denver E. Sowards, 72, of the Hennis Care Centre and formerly of Eberhart Rd. N.W., Dover died Friday, November 27, 2009 in Union Hospital following an extended illness.
Denver was a retired employee of the former Republic Steel Company in Massillon.
Born November 15, 1937 in Tango, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Oscar and Bertha Jeffreys Sowards. He was also preceded in death by five sisters, Opal Tackett, Margaret Newcomer, Gladys Spradling, Helen Clemmont, and Edna Berry and four brothers, Ernest, Jake, Elwood, and Linus Sowards.
He served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed the outdoors where he loved hunting, fishing, and farming. He enjoyed helping people and was a “grandpa” to many.
Denver is survived by his wife Mary Louise (Kirk) Sowards with whom he would have celebrated fifty three years of marriage this Christmas Day. He is also survived by two daughters, Brenda (husband, Dan) Boylan of Dover and Beverly (husband, Russ) Bordner of Dover; a son, Todd Sowards and his fiancé Barbie of Sherrodsville; a granddaughter, Lacey Jae Bordner; two sisters, Edith Sedlerick and Dorothy Coburn both of Michigan; two brothers, Grady Sowards of Florida and Joe Sowards of Michigan along with many nieces and nephews including John “Boogie”(wife, Sandy) Rose.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 1:30pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor W. Gene Cooper officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7pm.
