Dieter H. Wilkins, MD, 86, of New Philadelphia passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at Ohio's Hospice Truman House.
He was born on October 29, 1938, in Stuttgart, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1939, a significant journey that shaped the course of his life. He was a son of the late Harry and Anne Egenberger Wilkins. Dieter was also preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Wilkins on December 3, 2023.
Dieter received his undergraduate degree from Fairfield University in Connecticut and earned his doctoral degree from New York Medical College. His career was marked by a dedication to his patients, as he established a solo practice in Canton where he served for many years as an MD and OB physician. His compassion and commitment to healthcare left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dieter served his country with honor in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military service exemplified his strong sense of duty and patriotism. Dieter was dedicated to the well-being of his patients but also had a profound love for animals.
He is survived by his son, Matthew Wilkins of Idaho; step children, Kelly (Matt) Argento, Mark (Heather) O’Connor both of New Philadelphia, and Brent (Dalyn) O’Connor of Gnadenhutten; step grandchildren, Rian, Garin, Kyle (Kara), Brennon (Allysa), Keiron, and Brogan O'Connor, Cassidy (Charlie) Deeds, Connor (Monica) Argento, Heather (Josh) Mahaffey; and step great-grandchildren, Sloane Deeds, Bannon O’Connor, and Aiden and Nolan Mahaffey.
Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. A private celebration of Dieter's life will be held.
