Don Edgar Rieger

Don Edgar Rieger, 93, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2022 after a period of declining health. Born December 11, 1928, he was the son of the late George T. and Clara (Welsch) Rieger.

Don was a 1946 graduate of Dover High School and was extremely proud of the early education he received at Wooster Highway School in Dover. After graduation, he immediately began working at Wallick Coal and other local strip mines throughout the years. He was a dragline operator and shovel operator for many years, primarily GEX Hardy, near Sugarcreek. A fun loving, hard worker all his life, he retired four times from local stone quarries; the last time when he was 80 years old.

He was a real character, but a man of great character. He attended Winfield United Methodist Church. He enjoyed visiting family and friends, a good wiener roast, farming, auctions and road trips. He loved traveling all over the country but was particularly fond of The Great Smoky Mountains and Myrtle Beach vacations.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years Armella (Corbett) Rieger and daughters, Patricia Rieger, Linda (Jeff) Mason and Mary (Mark) Rufener. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and will be deeply missed by Justin (Stephanie) Mason, Molly (Brad) Pfeiffer, Natalie Mason, Dr. Thad Kandel, Stefanie (Ryan) Porter, step-granddaughters Lauren (Andrew) MacGregor and Kara Rufener. He adored his great grandchildren Maria, Anastasia and Veronica Mason, Audrey, Jack and Ellie Pfeiffer and Reese Porter.

Surviving members of his family are siblings Ray Rieger, Lydia Murphy and Joyce Espenschied and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by sisters Betty Alpeter, Ruth Sieber and Kathryn Bixler, a brother Bobby Rieger and two infant sisters.


Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 7th at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Pastor LuAnn Youngman officiating. Interment will be at the Dover Burial Park. The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-7 pm.
