Donald A. Senhauser Md

Donald Albert Senhauser M.D., 77, of Worthington, Ohio and Atwood Lake died Thursday, September 2, 2004 in his home in Worthington following an extended illness.

Born January 30, 1927 in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of the late Albert “Dutch” and Maude Snyder Senhauser.

Dr. Senhauser was Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine from 1975-92. He was also professor at the School of Allied Medical Professions, member of the Executive Committee for the College of Medicine and the Medical Staff Administrative Committee, Chairman of the hospital�(TM)s transfusions and isoimmunization committee, and member of the University Hospitals committee and the Veterans Administration Dean�(TM)s Committee. He was also Director of Laboratory Medicine, Professor and Chair Emeritus 1992-1998. He was honored with the naming of the Donald A. Senhauser Chair in Pathology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

He was co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of University Pathology Services, Inc. and University Reference Laboratories, Inc.

He was the 22nd President of the College of American Pathologists, Chair of the Publications Committee, Planning Committee, the Commission on Education, Education Resolve Committee, the SNOMED Authority, and the Elections Oversight Committee, member of the Commissions on Education, International Affairs, Nominations Committee, Educational Advisory Committee, and the Board of Governors of the College of Pathologists.

He was the Recipient of CAP Pathologist of the Year in 1994 and the Frank W. Hartman MD Memorial Award.

He served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Best Pre-Clinical Educator 1965-66.

He served as Vice Chairman of the Dept. of Pathology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine from 1968-75. Director of Blood Bank and Central Hematology Laboratory 1963-68/

He served as President and member of the Board of Governors of the Ohio Society of Pathologists, member of Ohio State Medical Assn. Committee of Laboratory Medicine, American Assn. Of Pathologists, Ameican Society of Clinical Pathologists, International Academy of Pathology, American Medical Assn., and the American Assn. Of Blood Banks.

He joined the United States Naval Reserve in 1945 and was the Honor Graduate in 1953 from the US Navy School of Aviation Medicine. He served as a Flight Surgeon in 1952-53 and then in the Far East from 53-55. He retired from the Navy in 1987 with the rank of Captain.

He received his medical degree in 1951 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, interned at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, served his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, was an Immunopathology Fellow, Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, England. He received his undergraduate degree from the Univerity of Chicago.

Don was also a 32nd degree mason and member of the Tuscarawas Lodge #59 in Dover. He enjoyed horse racing, trout fishing, and reading.

He is survived by his wife Helen Brown Senhauser with whom he celebrated 43 years of marriage on July 22. He is also survived by two sons William Brown (Rebecca) Senhauser of Washington DC and Norman Wesley Senhauser of Columbus; Four grandchildren Cameron Dutch Senhauser, Logan Donald Senhauser, Katherine Eaton Senhauser and John Matthew Senhauser.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nan Senhauser.

A celebration of Don�(TM)s life will be held Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004 at 2pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover with Pastor Paul J. Camp officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends will be received on Monday from 2-6pm and Tuesday from 1-2 pm in the funeral home.
