Donald D. "Chip" McComb, 73, of Midvale, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in his home, with his loving family around him. Chip had battled cancer for some time.
Born Dec. 13, 1936, in Dennison, he was a son of the late James and Laura James McComb. Chip graduated from Midvale High School in 1954. On May 16, 1955, he married the former Doris A. Robinson in the Church of God in Midvale. Chip worked for many years as a self-employed truck driver and owned and operated the Ohio Beverage Ice Co. in Midvale.
Chip was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and was very proud of his family. He enjoyed woodworking and through the years made well over a hundred stools for family and friends. Chip was a fan of Ohio State football and basketball, as well as NASCAR. He was also employed by the Midvale Speedway, where he was a ticket-taker and maintained the track.
Survivors include his wife, Doris; a daughter, Sandra (James) Donehue of New Philadelphia; two sons, Ronald (Teresa) McComb and Jeffrey (Dena) McComb, both of Midvale; ten grandchildren, Chrissy (Chad) Lynch, Eric (Gail Lyons) Donehue, Lindsay (Lee) Trushell, Zachary (Heather) Donehue, John (Jodi) Hursey, Joseph Donehue, Alex (fianc�e, Stephanie Hendricks) Hursey, Nikki (Aaron) Wells, Amber and Dianna Gwyer; fifteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Addie (Donald) Stull of Port Washington; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Chip was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Cole and Susan Risher; and by two brothers, Robert and Carl McComb.
A graveside service, open to the public, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m., in Union Cemetery, Port Washington, with Pastor Michael Travis of the Church of the Nazarene in Uhrichsville officiating. Following the service, the family will host a meal in the Midvale Park pavilion. In keeping with Chip's wishes, there will be no calling hours.
