Donald M. George, 89, of New Philadelphia went home to be with the Lord on August 1, 2009.

Born December 11, 1919 in Norton Township, Ohio he was a son of the late Rollie and Beulah Steese George.

Don married Helen E. White on February 22, 1939. Their souls were knitted together for over 66 years. They left a lasting legacy of love and devotion to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and were both Christians with a life long devotion to Jesus Christ. Helen passed away on June 9, 2005. In addition to his parents and wife, Don was also preceded in death by his brothers, Richard, Paul and Dale George; mother in law, Ruth White; brother and sister in law, John and Harriett Grimes and sister in law, Alice Dilworth.

Don worked in the trucking industry starting as a dockworker and road driver for Roadway Express in Akron starting in 1936. He eventually retired in 1988 from Montgomery Tank Lines in Plant City, Florida. Don was an Army veteran of WW II having served in France as a rifleman from 1944-1945 with Company "A" 1st Battalion, 399th Infantry Regiment of the 100th Infantry Division. He was wounded in the Vosges Mountains during the seizure of Bitche, France. At the conclusion of his military career he was the recipient of the Purple Heart, CIB and the Bronze Star.

Don was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia and was a past member of Johnson Methodist Church of Barberton, Ohio. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton and was a Shriner. Don was a life member of the DAV, American Legion, 100th Infantry Division Association, Delta Nu Alpha at Buchtel College and served on the board for SEI.

Don was a good man, son, husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by his children, Donald (wife, Janet) George of Akron, Thomas (wife, Angie) George of Shelby, Ohio and Jennifer George of New Philadelphia; sister, Dorothy Awe of Toledo; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Donald's life will be celebrated on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 10:30 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at New Philadelphia with Pastor Bill Sowers officiating. Immediately following the service, a meal will be served in the Broadway United Methodist Church. Interment will be at 2:30 pm in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Akron on Thursday. Friends can call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-8 pm with Masonic services starting at 7:45 pm.
