Donald R. German Sr.

Donald R. German Sr., 76, of Dover passed away at the Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

Born in Sherrodsville, Ohio on August 10, 1936, he was the son of the late Daniel and Dora (Potts) German. He is also preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Nona German; a daughter, Doris German; and a son, David Michael German.

Donald worked as a route carrier for the Dover Post Office for over 14 years. He also worked for the railroad. He enjoyed gardening, and bowling. At the age of five he began playing music. He spent much of his time playing a synthesizer at many nursing homes and clubs. Donald will be remembered for his outgoing personality and sense of humor.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Shirley Hayes, who he married on November 8, 2008; four daughters, Donna (Dean) Miller of Dover, Darla (Doug) Truman of Dover, Debbie Smith of Tippecanoe, Valerie (Junior) Holloway of Fredericksburg; two sons, Donald German Jr. of New Philadelphia, Dennis (Becky) German of Dover; two sisters, Nikki Lightfritz of Canton, Bonnie (Billy) Baker of Canton; eight step-children; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 11:00 am with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Following the service, the Dover VFW will conduct military honors. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday one hour prior to the service.
