Doris “Winnie” Harrington, 81, of Dover was called home to the Lord on Sunday, May 30, 2004. She was born in Shelby, Ohio on December 1, 1922 to Frank and Flora Stoffer Wheeler. She was a graduate of Shelby High School and the Akron City School of Nursing. Her nursing career started as a lieutenant in the US Army during WW II. She always said, “I joined the Army to see the world and got as far as Indiana”. She was very patriotic and proud to be an American.
After leaving the service, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she met her future husband, Tom Harrington. They were married on her birthday in 1946 and shared 36 loving years of marriage. They moved to Dover in 1952 where she lived the remainder of her life.
Winnie was a private duty nurse and then worked for Union Hospital. She also worked for Dr. H. E. Van Epps until his passing. She finished her nursing career with Dr. G.S. Tripathy, who she worked with for 23 years, until their retirement.
Following her retirement, she worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Mobile, was a reading aide at Dover Avenue Elementary and was a member of the DAR. She worked for the Board of Elections for 30 years. One of her proudest accomplishments was her ability to touch lives as an on-line missionary through e-mails and the internet to a congregation of over 200. Her family brought her much happiness and she will be sadly missed by them, as well as, by her many friends.
Winnie is survived by her daughter, Thelma (Ron) Manghese of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Charlotte Manghese and her fiancé George Woods Jr., Shelley (Ridha) Boughalmi of New Philadelphia and Matt (Janie) Manghese of Port Washington; six great grandchildren, Anthony and Aleesha Manghese, Dector Solis, Zane Peterson, Katrina Manghese and Donnie Coen.
In addition to her husband and parents she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Jack Wheeler.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday with Rev. George Woods Sr. officiating. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover is handling arrangements. Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Winnie may do so by visiting the on line obituaries link on the funeral homes website.
