Doris J. Pep, 82, of Dover passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at Cleveland Clinic Avon
Hospital following a period of declining health.
Doris was born in Mill Township in Tuscarawas County on August 3, 1939. She was the daughter of the
late Oscar and Norene (Walker) Hughes. She married Willie Pep who preceded her in death on
December 9, 1995.
She was also preceded in death by her two sons; Raymond “Kevin” Mills, Woodrow Washington III;
daughter, Norene Mills; three infant brothers; along with her grandson, Wendell Washington II.
Doris was a very talented and esteemed seamstress throughout her community as well as among her
clients and friends within the entertainment industry. She was also known for her leadership role in the
local 4H Chapter where her children were members. Doris used her compassion and sewing skills to
empower her children and other young ladies in her community. In addition, she loved visiting and
talking with friends, and most often you could find her reading her bible and listening to her Christian
programming. She also loved plants and gardening.
She was a former member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Massillon and also attended her family’s
church home, St. Marks Methodist Church in Dover.
Doris will be sadly missed by her children; Cheryl (Mark) Streeter of Hampton, VA, Shaurita “Sweet Pea”
Adele of Canton, Arthur Smith of Dover, Wendell Washington of Massillon, Phyllis Washington of Dover;
sister, Phyllis (Bruce) Lowery Dorsey; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; along with her halfsister, Betty (Roger) Henderson of Warren, Michigan.
In celebration of Doris’ life, a visitation will take place at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes & Crematory
in Dover on Thursday, September 30, 2021, from 5-7 pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral
home on Friday, October 1, 2021, at 12 pm with Pastor Rashed As-Samad officiating. Burial will follow at
Dover Burial Park. A reception will follow at 140 Regent St. Dover, Ohio 44622. To sign an online
