Doris Mae Barnhouse

April 18, 1923 — May 10, 2016

Doris Mae Lowery Barnhouse, age 93, of Dover, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. She died in her home in Dover surrounded by her family as was her wish. She was born to Alice Lowery McFeeley on April 18, 1923 in Toronto, Ohio. After her mother's death, she went to live with her mother's brother, Joseph Turnbull (Mae) Lowery and their son, David J. Lowery. This became her family. Doris graduated from Toronto High School in June, 1941, where she graduated with honors and was a member of the National Honor Society. She went to work for the Weirton Steel Corporation in July, 1941, as a secretary in the employment office and worked until 1946. She returned to work in 1964 until 1981 for the Smith Eckart Corporation as an account clerk in Wintersville, Ohio.

In 1941, Doris met the love of her life, James Beymer Barnhouse. On his return from the war in July, 1945, they were married on August 11, 1945 in the Presbyterian Church in Toronto by the Rev. S.O. Wise. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage until his death on April 30, 1986.

Doris was a member of the Starkdale United Presbyterian Church in Steubenville, Ohio for many years where she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the Starkdale UMW, Bible school coordinator, and youth camp counselor. She had the privilege of serving as president of the Steubenville Presbyterial from 1964 to 1967. In July of 1984 they moved to Strasburg, Ohio to be closer to their daughter and her family. They became active members of the Strasburg United Methodist Church. Doris again taught Sunday school and was active in the women's association and in the church mission. She was a 20 year volunteer for Dress-a-Child. She was also a member of the Church Women United, Toronto High School Alumni, and the Steven Christian Post #557 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Toronto for 56 years. She taught Sunday school for over 60 years.
Doris went to live with her daughter and son in law, Roy and Sharon Crawford in 1994 and enjoyed a happy life at their home for 21 years helping to raise her great grandchildren-Zachary, Landon, Allie, Chasse, and Brett who all lovingly called her "Wawa." She loved visiting and being with her sister, Wanda Firm. She enjoyed senior trips, bus tours, plays, and going on outings with Sharon and Roy. Her happiest times were visiting her grandchildren and great grandchildren in Richmond, Virginia, Plano, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, David Lowery, Tommy Lowery, and Jack McFeeley and sister, Donna Temply Byrum.

She is survived by her only daughter, Sharon (Roy) Crawford; grandchildren, Troy Joseph (Lisa) Crawford and Amy Jean Crawford; great grandchildren, Zachary, Landon, and Allie Crawford and Chasse and Brett Miller; many nieces and nephews whom she enjoyed hearing from often and visiting.

A special thank you to the Great Lakes Caring Hospice for their specialized care she received in her home that enhanced her life and added to her comfort and well being.
