Dorothy L. Seward, 82, of Strasburg died Saturday, January 2, 2016 at her home following an extended illness.
Born March 16, 1933 in Strasburg she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Margie Deibel Yackey. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Seward on February 23, 2013; sisters, Margaret Lautenschleger; brothers, Carl, Dallas and Clarence Yackey.
Dorothy retired in 1995 as a cook from Strasburg High School after 20 years of service. She was a dedicated member of the First Lutheran Church in Strasburg having sung in the choir, served on Altar Guild and was active with the quilters. She was also a member of the Strasburg American Legion Auxiliary and AARP. In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, family vacations, going on bus trips with Sam and taking walks with her friends. She loved spending time with her family during the holidays, summer cook outs, reunions or any family get-together.
Known for her beautiful smile and for being a wonderful mother and grandmother, Dorothy will be sadly missed by her daughter, Cindy L. Seward of Strasburg; three sons, Samuel D. (Cyndi) and Gregory A. (Rebecca) Seward, both of Strasburg, and Jeffrey L. (Vicki) of Norton; six grandchildren, Samantha (Doug) Johnson, Leigh Ann, Clarence and Donald "D.J." Seward, Denaye (Joe) Hagi and Jeffrey Seward; seven great-grandchildren, Molly R. Feller, Kaylynn, Brock and Emily Johnson, Noah, Emma and Ella Hagi; sisters in law, Thelma Nixon of Sandyville, Twila Yackey of Dover and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 6 at 11:00 am in the First Lutheran Church at Strasburg with Pastor Karen Biggerstaff officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover on Tuesday from 4-7 pm. The family would like to thank the staff of Community Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care shown towards Dorothy and for making her final days as comfortable as possible.
