Dorothy M. May, 89, of New Philadelphia died early Monday morning, Jan. 23, 2012 in Union Hospital at Dover.
Dorothy retired from the former Endres Floral Company in New Philadelphia where she worked for 18 years. Following retirement, Dorothy worked at the former Super K Mart in New Philadelphia. She had also previously been employed at Sales Dept. Store in Dover, Yaggi's Cheese House in New Philadelphia, former Woolworth's 5 & 10 at Dover and the former LaFountaine's Store in New Philadelphia.
Born August 20, 1922 in Dover, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Myrtle (Howell) Clay and her stepmother, Marie (Hollingbaugh) Clay.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dennis J. May Sr. who died on Jan. 21, 1983; one great grandson, Craig Anthony Riley; four brothers and a sister, Jim and Pauline Clay, Alfred and Betty Clay, Arthur Clay, Mary (Clay) and Steve Vargo and Robert Clay;her son in law, Mike Nugo three stepbrothers, Robert, Edward, and Harold Hollingbaugh.
She met her husband, Dennis in the Spanish Ballroom in high school and later married on Aug. 22, 1942. While Dennis served his country in the US Army during World War II, Dorothy lived in Cleveland for a few years . When they returned to the area, they resided in the original May family home on May Valley Road where she remained until 1997 and spent her remaining years living with her daughter, Bonnie. Dorothy became very active in the community having served as a 4H Advisor for the York Futurettes for eighteen years. She was a member of the Jerusalem Church in New Philadelphia. She was also involved in the Home Demonstration Club for nine years and was a member of the Dover Moose, Eagles, Army Navy Club, and VFW Auxiliaries, York PTA, New Phila Band Boosters, Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, Tuscarawas County Democratic Women, Rebekah Lodge, and Companions of the Forest. She was a 1941 graduate of Dover High School and her class just had their 70th and final class reunion this past year. She had numerous other interests over the years from playing bridge with her bridge club, to competing in quilting, sewing, cooking, baking, cake decorating, flower gardening, working with leather where she hand made wallets, purses, and belts at the local fair. She also could be seen working at the 4H barbecues.
Dorothy will be sadly missed by her children; Karen Jean (May) Nugo of New Philadelphia, Dennis John May Jr. of Parral, David Lynn (Connie) May of New Philadelphia, Linda Sue (David Sr.) Hykes of Wakeman, Ohio, and Bonnie Lou May and her companion David Hirning of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren, Melissa (Matt) Nugo Cappillo, Buffie, Brook Ann, and Adam May, David (Nicole) Hykes Jr., and Devin Hykes and his companion Alissa Fairchild; 5 step grandchildren, Matt Nugo, Michelle (Terry) Fox, and Mary Ann Nugo;, Karin (D'Angelo) Lino, and Travas Boswell; seven great grandchildren Brandon, Joel, Felicia, Kendra, Savannah, River and Reese; six step great grandchildren Michael, Emily, Kayla, Amari, Javon and Madison.
A brother, Thomas (Ruth) Clay of Dover and sisters in law, Edna Clay of Dover and Dorie Clay both of Dover; a former daughter in law, Harriet May; and a step sister Mary Lou Lahmers of Dover.
Funeral services celebrating Dorothy's life will be held Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor Dode Overton officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Dennis at the Dover Burial Park. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5-8 pm.
