Dorothy M. Ress, age 98, of New Philadelphia, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018, in Community Hospice’s Truman House.
Born September 6, 1919, in Dover, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Hazel Williams Herzig. Dorothy graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1938, and married Robert W. “Bob” Ress in May 1940. The couple shared sixty-eight years of marriage prior to Bob’s passing on June 17, 2008. Dorothy was employed by Motor Freight, Inc. of New Philadelphia for twenty-five years, retiring in 1970. In retirement, she owned and operated Dorothea’s House of Gifts in downtown New Philadelphia, and she and Bob enjoyed wintering in Punta Gorda, Florida.
Dorothy was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star and Lady Elks, all of New Philadelphia, as well as the Tuscarawas County Y.M.C.A. and the Women’s Business Association; she also volunteered at Union Hospital, Dover. In Florida, Dorothy belonged to the St. Andrews South Golf Club, Punta Gorda Civic Center, Isles Yacht Club, Visual Arts Center, Y.W.C.A., and volunteered at the Charlotte Regional Medical Center and the nearby Children’s Museum.
Survivors include her son, Bill (Ann) Ress of New Philadelphia; her grandsons, Greg (Jen) and Doug (Ulla) Ress, both also of New Philadelphia, and Ryan (Adrian Kastner) Ress of Fort Myers, Florida; her great-grandchildren, Reagan, Rachel, Julia and Kaylee Ress; her nieces and nephews, including Patricia Giannos and Dianne Gibbs, with whom she was very close.
Besides her parents, and her husband, Bob, Dorothy was preceded in death by her siblings, Jeanette Ress, Ruth Froman, Jane Nota, and Jim and Jack Herzig.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 7, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover; Rev. Scott C. Nellis will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. Following the committal, there will be a lunch in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
