Dorothy Swonger

Dorothy Swonger, 87, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, January 11, 2000 in the South Broadway Nursing Home. She had been a Registered Nurse at Union Hospital in Dover for over 35 years, having retired in 1971. Born June 20, 1912 at Lakewood, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Christopher and Harriet Bivens Oppliger. She was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ, having worshipped at both St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover and more recently at the First united Church of Christ in New Philadelphia. She was also active in the Martha's Circle. She was a 1934 graduate of Fairview General Hospital in Cleveland. She had worked at Lakewood Hospital and St. John's Hospital at Cleveland and was a member of the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and the Reliable Rebekah Lodge at Dover. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Swonger, who passed away on August 28, 1977. Survivors include: A son Donald Swonger of London, Ohio Stepdaughter Mrs. Donald (Mary) Zimmerman of New Philadelphia 2 step-sons Robert S. Swonger & Eugene C. Swonger both of Dover 2 sisters Mrs. Harry (Florence) Sears of California Mrs. Jack (Betty) Torsney of Sun City, AZ Eleven grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her step-father, Charles Jackson, one brother and a grandchild. In keeping with Dorothy's wishes cremation will take place and a public memorial service will be held Sunday, January 16 at 1:00pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover with Rev. Stuart Barr officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Dover at a later date.
