Dr. Robert L. McCulley, 91, of New Philadelphia died Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at his home following a sudden illness.
Born August 19, 1914 in Cambridge, Ohio he was a son of the late Clarence and Henrietta McCulley.
He graduated from Brown High School in 1932 and entered Muskingum College of that year and took two years of pre-med. He enrolled in the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1934 and graduated in the class of 1938 with a degree of D.O., and served his internship at Marietta, Ohio. He moved to Newcomerstown in October of 1949 and was in family practice for 44 years. He was a life member of the Ohio Osteopathic Association and a life member of the American Osteopathic Association.
Other memberships were the Grace Lutheran Church in Dover, Lone Star Lodge of Newcomerstown, where he received his 60-year membership pin on May 6, 2003, member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge and Alladin Shrine Temple of Columbus, past president of the Lions Club and a life member of the Elks Club of Newcomerstown, member of the Newcomerstown Progress Corporation and served on the board of Riverside Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, past member of the board of directors of Bank One of Dover.
Married in 1939 to Frances M. Eggert McCulley who died in 1970. Two children were born to this union, Nancy Wise and William McCulley of Columbus. Nancy died May 29, 2002. Married Dorothy J. Smith McCulley in 1976 and is also survived by two daughters, Joan Breyer (Sherman) Smith of Caldwell and Janet (Bob) Schenk of Dover; seven grandchildren, Burgundie McCulley, Richard and Jeffrey Wise, Brigitte Breyer Daly, Melissa Breyer Hughes, Melanie Neidenthal and Marcus Malcuit; great grandchildren, Danielle Daly, Breyer Daly, Avery Hughes, Matthew, Michael and Mitchell Neidenthal.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary K. Murray and a grandson, Kipp Wise.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Grace Lutheran Church at Dover with Pastor James Lewis officiating. Following the service there will be a reception held at Luther Hall. There are no calling hours. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory in Dover are handling arrangements.
