Edith Schaar Thurmond

Edith E. Schaar Thurmond, 92, of Dover passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013.

Born on March 6, 1921 in Wadsworth, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Leona Cox Varney. She married Byron Schaar, who preceded her in death on December 20, 1991. On December 5, 1999, she married Roy C. Thurmond. The couple was married at New Dawn Health Care, which was where they met. Roy preceded her in death on July 11, 2010. She is also preceded in death by her son; Terry Schaar; and four brothers, Claude, Herbert, Edward and William Varney.

Edith volunteered as a swim instructor for over 25 years at the Tuscarawas County YMCA. She was a member of the Church of God in New Philadelphia, and Patient Council at New Dawn Health Care Center. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, making quilts, and was known for her handmade pot scratchers. She loved all animals, especially Yorkshire Terriers. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

Survivors include her son; Ronnie Schaar; step-daughter, Rebecca (Robert) Craig; step-son, Clark Thurmond of Lancaster; sister in-law, Kathryn Varney of Wadsworth; nephew, Larry (Diane) Varney of Akron; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A public graveside service will take place at Dover Burial Park on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 11:30 am with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover are handling the arrangements.
