Edward E. “Ed” Berndt, age 79, of Newcomerstown, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018, in Community Hospice’s Truman House, New Philadelphia, following a recent stroke.
Born April 1, 1938, in Dover, Ed was a son of the late Edward and Ruth Harper Berndt. He graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1957, and was employed by the Warner & Swasey Co. - later Gradall - in New Philadelphia for many years, from which he retired. A hard-worker, Ed was also employed as maintenance supervisor for Twin City Hospital, Dennison - at the same time as his job at Warner & Swasey, and as maintenance supervisor for Morning View Care Center, New Philadelphia.
Ed enjoyed his grandchildren’s activities, especially their sporting events. Additionally, he liked to hunt, fish and work with wood.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca S. “Becky” Fischio Berndt, whom he married on March 1, 1997; his children, Christy Valentine of Cambridge, Eddy (Heather) Berndt of Newcomerstown, Teri (Ed) Corletzi of Chagrin Falls, and Jennifer (Jeff) Auten of Atlanta, Georgia; his step-children, Ronald (Barb) Drescher of Bolivar, Ryan (Jessica) Drescher of Dover, Heath (Keri) Drescher of New Philadelphia, and Crystal (Teena) McKamey of Kent; his fourteen grandchildren; his five great-grandchildren; his sisters, Anna Lou Duncan and Kathy (Jim) Wilds; his former wife, Bonnie Sheville; his nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Race.
Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his sister, Ruthy Morrison.
In keeping with Ed’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Cremation is in the care of the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover.
The family suggests that contributions in Ed’s memory be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
