Edward R. "Ed" Yackey, 75, of Strasburg passed away on October 18, 2024, at Ohio’s Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia.
Born on February 18, 1949, in Dover, he was the son of the late Carl and Twyla (Maus) Yackey.
Ed graduated from Strasburg High School in 1967, excelling in all four sports. As part of the 1967 undefeated state championship basketball team, Ed was later inducted into both the Strasburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame (2016) and the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame (2023). Furthering his education, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Akron, setting the stage for a successful career. Ed began his professional journey at Warner & Swasey in Minnesota and later lent his skills to Jeffrey Mining in Columbus. His career flourished when he became the Vice President and Co-Owner of Commercial Honing in Dover, where he worked for 25 years before retiring in 2002.
Ed remained connected to his hometown through his commitment to education and local progress. He was instrumental in procuring the land for the building of the new school. Ed was the builder and school committee liaison throughout the process. He served on the Strasburg School Board for an impressive 24 years, was a longtime member of the Strasburg Lions Club, and was a charter member of the Tiger Foundation. He earned the Distinguished Alumni Award from Strasburg High School in 2022, for his dedication and service to the school and community.
Outside of his professional life, Ed found joy in woodworking and cherished fishing trips to Canada, activities that reflected his love for nature and craftsmanship. A devoted member of the Strasburg Lutheran Church, Ed's faith played an essential role in his life. Above all, he loved spending time with family and attending his grandchildren’s events.
Ed married his high school sweetheart, Stephanie (Smith) Yackey, on June 10, 1972. In addition to Stephanie, he will be sadly missed by his children; Carla (Paul) Schauer, Kyle (Mary) Yackey, and Kendra Wolgamott; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Brynna, and Aric Schauer, Carson and Kiera Yackey, and Logan and Nora Wolgamott; his sisters-in-law, Jeanne Gatling, and Yvonne Plummer; his nephews, Nathaniel Gatling and Vijay Karode; and his niece, Kara Dooley.
