Eldon J.L. Lahmers

September 4, 1925 — June 1, 2006

Eldon J.L. Lahmers, age 80, of Dover, left this world for a better place, a place of rest and no more pain. He leaves behind a loving family " his wife Mary Lou Hollingbaugh Lahmers, whom he married Jun. 6, 1948; two sons, Gary H. (wife, Judy) Lahmers of Berkley, MA, and Rhett E. Lahmers of Dover; five grandchildren, Chelsea, Eve, Anne, Jacob and Sophia Lahmers; a great-granddaughter, Lily; two brothers, Ralph (wife, Mardell) Lahmers of East Sparta, and Ted (wife, Sally) Lahmers of New Philadelphia; a sister, Anna Florence (husband, Lloyd) Swinderman of New Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews; and a very special aunt, Eva Steinbach.

Eldon was born Sept. 4, 1925, in the family home on Dover-Zoar Road to the late Carl and Verda Lahmers. He attended the nearby Penobscott School, and later graduated from Dover High School. Eldon played football for the undefeated 1942 Tornadoes team (his son Gary played for the 1967 undefeated team). In December of 1943, Eldon joined the United States Navy, and served on the U.S.S. Dade and on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Midway in the Pacific Theater of War.

In 1948, he was accepted into the National Radio and Television Institute in Cleveland, under the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1951. Eldon went to work for Foutz Stove & Appliance (now Foutz Appliance Center), as a television repairman. He went on to open his own business, Lahmers(TM) T.V., on Tuscarawas Avenue in New Philadelphia. He and Mary Lou worked side by side in the business until illness forced Eldon to retire in 1976. Mary Lou continued to operate the business of selling and servicing electronics with the help of their son Gary.

Eldon and Mary Lou would have celebrated their fifty-eighth wedding anniversary in June, and had many, many happy memories involving family, friends, work and travel.

Eldon(TM)s life will be celebrated in a service Monday, Jun. 5, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Rev. Allen Bergmann of the First Moravian Church, Dover, officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a reception in the First Moravian Church. Eldon(TM)s cremated remains will be buried in a private ceremony in Dover Burial Park. Family and friends are invited to call, pay their respects and reminisce at the funeral home on Sunday, Jun. 4, 5 " 8 p.m. To sign an online guestbook and share a fond memory of Eldon, please visit the Toland-Herzig Web site and click on “obituaries.”

The family suggests that contributions in Eldon(TM)s memory be made to the First Moravian Church, 319 N. Walnut St., Dover, OH 44622, or, to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622.
