Ellis E. "Jack" or "Smoke" Finley, 89, of Dover, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, in Park Village Heath Care Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1921, in Noble County, Jack was a son of the late Earl and Hazel Lott Finley. He attended school at Quaker City, and, on Nov. 2, 1939, married the former Helen M. House in Caldwell. Jack served honorably in the United States Army during the Second World War, much of that time in The Philippines. Following his discharge, he returned to Tuscarawas County, where he was employed by Twin Cities Concrete and the Greer Steel Co. Jack was a hardworker, and for a time was employed by both companies, finishing a shift at one and then going on to work at the other. He ultimately retired from Greer.
Jack was a faithful member of the First Moravian Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge, all of Dover.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen (George) Waldron of Dover; a son, Richard (Pat) Finley of Spring, TX; four grandchildren, Heather (Tim) Hodes, Richard (Kim) Finley, David (Sarah) Waldron and Tracy Brinker; nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen, on May 30, 2008; three sisters and two brothers.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 17, at 1:30 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Pastor John B. Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park, where military rites will be conducted by the Dover post of the V.F.W.
