Esther C. (Weigand) Carl, 94, quietly and peacefully left us to be with the Lord on Wednesday, the 26th of November, 2008, at Park Village Assisted Living Center.
A faithfully devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, Esther spent her life serving others and was happiest when in her kitchen preparing home-cooked meals for her family and friends.
She was a lifelong resident of Dover and a lifelong member of Saint Joseph Parish, where she was active in Christian Mothers. She also enjoyed being a member of the Penobscot Homemakers group.
She married Herbert Carl in 1932, and together they raised five children on their family farm on Dover-Zoar Road. They are Roselyn (Ralph) Cunningham of Navarre, Louis (Grace) Carl, Dorothy Carl, Clara (Anthony) Mason, all of Dover, and Jean (Rick) Troyer of Sugarcreek.
Esther was an avid baker, quilter, a steadfast neighbor, and loyal farmer's wife. She loved her grandchildren deeply and spent much of her time with them, generously offering cookie after cookie of her delicious seasonal cutouts. Esther also was an ardent gardener, and her summers were spent canning produce, and she was famous for her Concord grape juice.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Clara (Bair) Weigand; her husband, Herbert A. Carl; a brother, Paul Weigand; and by a grandson, Benjamin Mason.
She will be profoundly missed by her sister, Iva Kaser, of Dover; all of her children and their spouses; her grandchildren, Timothy Hodge, Priscilla Cunningham, Christina (Mason) Steffy, Rebecca Mason, Heidi Troyer, Heather Troyer, Suzanne Mason, and Aaron Troyer; and four great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Hodge, Patrick Hodge, Genevieve Steffy and Nadia Steffy.
Calling hours will be Sunday, November 30, 2 - 5 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover, where a Christian wake service will be held at 4:45 p.m. The Rite of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Dec. 1, at 1:30 p.m., in Saint Joseph Church, with Father William L. Arnold officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Dover. To sign an online register and share a fond memory of Esther, please visit the funeral home's Web site and click on Obituaries.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Esther's memory be made to Saint Joseph Church, 613 N. Tuscarawas Ave., Dover, OH, 44622, or to Young Life of Tuscarawas and Holmes Counties, P.O. Box 490, Sugarcreek, OH, 44681.
