Ethel R. Border

101-year-old lifelong resident of Dover, Ethel R. Border, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 in the New Dawn Retirement Community.

She was born March 24, 1909, the daughter of the late Harry & Sarah Shonk Archinal.

Ethel was a member of Dover's St. John's United Church of Christ where she had been in the Rebecca Circle and Adult Bible Class. She was active for many years with the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and enjoyed its dinners and social outings, along with a number of the center's travel opportunities. She was also honored to be a gold and blue star mother.

She will be remembered as quite a character with a fun-loving personality. She loved playing games, from cards to Bingo and Yahtzee and was thrilled to learn about the Game Show Network on television, of which she became an instant fan.

Despite her years, she kept a much younger appearance, taking great care to make sure that her hair and make-up were always just right.

Her husband, Raymond J. Border, who died July 18, 1973, preceded her in death. Along with her husband and parents, three sons, William, Charles and James Border; a sister, Florence Winkler; and two brothers, Glen and Paul Archinal also preceded Ethel in death.

Surviving family members include: a son, Thomas (Carolyn) Border of Navarre; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mrs. Johnson.

Rev. Michael Lowry will officiate a service that celebrates Ethel's life on Monday, September 27, at 11:00 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Interment will follow in Stone Creek Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral home on Sunday from 5-8 p.m.
