Eugene D. Barker, 86, a longtime New Philadelphia resident, died Sunday, December 25, 2005, in the Hennis Care Centre, Dover.
He spent more than 24 years working locally for General Electric. For many years over that same period of time, he was a custodian at New Philadelphia High School.
Born January 8, 1919 at Burnsville, WV, he was the son of the late French D. & Rachael Mick Barker.
Gene was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in New Philadelphia. He was a longtime support of the New Philadelphia Marching Quaker Band and assisted as a chaperone on trips for several years. He was also a green thumb who loved tending to his vegetable garden. In fact, during the warm weather gardening months, always told friends how he would never go hungry with his famous peanut butter and tomato sandwiches.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred V. Barker, who died December 5, 1980.
Survivors include: a son, Royce Barker of Louisiana; a sister, Ruth C. McHenry, of Massillon; and a grandson Scott Barker.
In addition to his parents and wife, Gene was preceded in death by a brother, E. Sherwood Barker.
Tim Hatfield will officiate a ceremony that celebrates Gene�(TM)s life on Wednesday, December 28, at 2:00pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. Friends may call in the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until time of services at 2:00 p.m.
