Eugene J. “Gene” Schumacher, age 95, of Dover, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at the Inn at Northwood Village.
Born April 1, 1922, in New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Edward P. and Dorothy M. Rippeth Schumacher. Gene graduated from Dover High School and went on to serve honorably with the U.S. Navy during the Second World War. He married the former Margaret Trustdorf on August 14, 1948; the couple reared two sons and shared fifty-nine years of marriage prior to Margaret’s passing on November 5, 2007. Gene was employed for many years by Republic Steel in Massillon, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Dover Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, 40 et 8 – where he was Chef de Gare, Elks and Moose Lodges, all of Dover.
Survivors include his sons, Dr. Gary (Joyce) Schumacher of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Kurt (Cynthia) Schumacher of Cincinnati; his five grandchildren; his seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Jack Schumacher of Elyria; and his nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, and his beloved wife, Margaret, Gene was preceded in death by his infant sister and his brother, Bill Schumacher.
A service celebrating Gene’s life will be held Saturday, August 12, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover; Pastor Thomas Dunkle will officiate. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park, where military rites will be conducted. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the social hall of St. John’s Church. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday, August 11, 5 – 7 p.m.
The family suggests that contributions in Gene’s memory be made to St. John’s U.C.C., 409 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, Ohio 44622.
