Evelyn Elaine Ditto, 86, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born January 20, 1925 in Dover, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Hattie Tschantz Shull. Evelyn graduated from Dover High School and was employed by the Berger Manufacturing Co., Canton, and later by the Dover Sad Iron Co. She married Eddie William Ditto on November 16, 1947. The couple shared nearly sixteen years together and reared nine children before Eddie's untimely death on September 25, 1963, at the age of 44. Evelyn then went to work at the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia where she was custodian for many years.
Evelyn was a member of First Church. She enjoyed listening to music, especially old hymns and polkas, and challenging herself with word puzzles.
Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Ditto and Dorene (Greg) Draher, both of New Philadelphia, and Ruth (Gene) Tinlin of Canton; five sons, Eddie (Carol) Ditto and William Ditto, both of New Philadelphia, Frank (Amy) Ditto of Baltic, Wesley Ditto of Bowerston, and Patrick (Darla) Ditto of Millersburg; fourteen grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren (and one expected in January 2012); eight-step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roberta Ford of Newark, and Shirley Shull of Dover; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, and her husband, Eddie, Evelyn was preceded in death by a son, Robert Ditto; two sisters, Virginia Jamison and Arlene Stanton; two brothers, Robert Shull Jr. and Tom Ayers; as well as her grandparents, including her maternal grandfather, John Tschantz, who had a great influence on Evelyn's life.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 4, at 1:30 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Pastors Jeffrey Gerber and Jill Lovett officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the First United Church of Christ.
