Frances E. Porter, 87, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in her home. Fran�(TM)s death was due to cancer, an illness she faced with courage and humor.
Born October 1, 1916 in New Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late John M. and Mayme G. Kinsey Gray. Fran grew up on College Avenue N.W., New Philadelphia, and attended New Philadelphia High School. She married George F. Porter on October 15, 1938. Fran and George owned and operated Porter Plumbing Co., New Philadelphia, for many years, a business founded by George�(TM)s father at the beginning of the last century. She ran the plumbing company office by herself through much of World War II, when metals were scarce, and George was in the service of his country.
Fran was a member of the First Moravian Church, Dover. She served as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, and was very proud of the fact that three of her Cub Scouts went on to practice law. Fran was also active in the New Philadelphia Parent-Teacher Association. She participated in several ladies�(TM) golf and bowling leagues, and was a great fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include her son, John Eric (Lisa) Porter of New Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Duane) Vickers, and Tyler, Trevor and Taylor, all of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Alice Gray of Dover; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat and dog, Midnight and Chance.
In addition to her parents, Fran was preceded in death by her husband, George, on July 30, 1997; two sisters and three brothers.
Fran�(TM)s life will be celebrated in a service Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Rev. Allen L. Bergmann officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. There will be a reception in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, 831 Boulevard, Dover, following the committal.
