Fred J. Shumaker

Fred J. Shumaker, 84, of Dover died Monday, November 24, 2008 in the Park Village Health Care Center at Dover.

Born December 14, 1923 in Dover he was a son of the late Fred E. and Ruth Nirote Shumaker. His brother, Robert Shumaker an infant daughter and an infant brother and sister also preceded him in death.

He retired from the Shenango Penn Mold Co. in Dover after 45 years of service.

Fred was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he served on the Evangelism committee and played in the church orchestra. He was a life member of the Dover VFW, Dover Eagles and was also a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp and the Musicians Union. Fred was a well-known musician in the area, having played the trumpet for the Tuscarawas County Philharmonic, Dominic Greco Band, was an original member of the Lew Woods Orchestra. Fred also played for several local and Canton area dance bands. He was an Army veteran of WW II having served as a Medic and Bandsman in the China-Burma-India Theatre.

Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria Steely Shumaker whom he married on January 12, 1950. He is also survived by two sons, Eric (Judy) Shumaker of Texas and Keith (Cara) Shumaker of Dover; sister, Donna (Dan) Marshall of Dover; grandson, Paul Shumaker and his sister in law, Mariam Shumaker of Florida.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Jim Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held in Luther Hall at Grace Lutheran Church. Friends can call in the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 pm with an Eagles service starting at 5:45 pm.
