Frederick W. "Fred" Penix, age 64, of Dover, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, in Community Hospice House, New Philadelphia, from complications of diabetes.
Born November 8, 1949, in Dover, he was a son of the late Leland and Lillian Neisel Penix. Fred grew up at Winfield, a little town that was always close to his heart, and attended Dover High School graduating in 1967. A hard worker all of his life, Fred was first employed by the U.S. Ceramic Tile Co. at East Sparta. He then entered the service of his country in the U.S. Navy, much of that time aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga. Upon his honorable discharge in 1973, Fred went to work for Marlite at Dover, and then Stone Container at New Philadelphia, and its successors, Smurfit-Stone and Graphic Packaging International, from which he retired in 2012 after thirty-one years.
He married the former Carol A. Gallagher on September 12, 1975, in Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church at Louisville Carol's home church.
Fred was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at Dover, a life member of the Dover Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and "The Fred Society." He loved Dover football, having had season tickets since 1969, and liked following the Ohio State Buckeyes as well. Fred also enjoyed reading give him a book and some oldies music, and he was happy.
In addition to his wife, Carol, Fred is survived by a son, Jon (Tiffany) Penix of Dover; his granddaughter, Reese Lillian Penix; his two brothers, Chuck (Sue) Penix of Albany, Ohio, and Rich Penix of Columbus; his nephew, Ken Penix; and by his several cousins.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Friday, February 7, 5 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 8, at 10:30 a.m., in the funeral home, with Pastor Donald L. Rice, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park, where military rites will be presented by the Dover V.F.W.
