Gary L. Giumenti, 72, of Dover, O. passed away on June 15, 2008, in his residence following an eight month battle with cancer.
Born May 24, 1936, in New Philadelphia, O., Gary was the son of the late Raymond and Lena (Bollini) Giumenti. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a longtime member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dover.
Gary retired from the City of Dover after 30 years of service. Following retirement, he was a heavy equipment operator for Gasser Excavating for 15 years, digging basements and doing other excavating work for many of the area's homes and businesses.
Gary had a lifelong love of cars. He was an avid car enthusiast and restorer of classic vehicles. When his children were younger, he kept them well fitted with cars to drive. He also continued his interest in fast cars by building and racing a drag car. He could be seen regularly at the Pacemaker or Magnolia drag strip on race days. Gary also built several street rods, which he enjoyed taking to area car shows and won many awards. He also was a sports fan, and enjoyed watching professional football and baseball. Gary loved his family and especially enjoyed watching the activities of his children and
grandchildren. He enjoyed hosting gatherings for family and friends, including an annual Christmas Eve party, birthdays, and many summer cookouts. Gary's children looked forward to spending time with their father and eagerly traveled to their parents' home for family gatherings. Gary had a great sense of humor and always had a good joke or story to tell. Gary never met a stranger.
Gary is survived by his wife, Nancy (Kastor) Giumenti, with whom he celebrated their 50th
Wedding Anniversary on July 20, 2007; three sons, David Giumenti of Dover, Michael (Katie)
Giumenti of Westerville, O., and James (Christine) Giumenti of Dover; one daughter, Elisa (Dennis) Friedl of Walworth, NY; and five grandchildren, Edward, Lauren, Nicholas, Marshal, and Vincent. Gary is also survived by one brother, Charles Giumenti of Roswell, one sister, Anita Rice of Carrollton, two aunts, Rena Giumenti of New Philadelphia, and Julie Bosio of Stillwater, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, June 18, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father William Arnold officiating.
