George Jack Space went to the Lord on Tuesday, September 26, 2017.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Bea. He was the father to Demetria (Robert) Hollister, Zachary (Jean) Space, and Anette (Ron) Hooker. He was the adoring Papou to Carl, George, Christopher, Gretchen, Heidi, Zachary, Andrew, Vanessa and Nicholas, and the fun-loving great- Papou to 13 great grandchildren. George is also survived by his sister, Mary Space Smith, his brother, Socrates Space, his sister-in-laws, Clara Hutras, Dolly Linamen, Mary Ann Space and Sandy Space.
In addition to his parents, Jack and Despina Space, George was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Pete, and his sister, Gina.
George served as a First Sergeant in the U.S Army, 10th Mountain Division during World War II. In 1946, George married the love of his life, Basilia Bessie N.”Bea” Kayafas, and the couple raised their family in East Cleveland. In 1966, Bea and George moved to their Camelot setting in Madison. George was a test mechanic at General Motors’ Euclid, Inc. from which he retired after 30 years of service. He was a founding member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Mentor, a member of the AHEPA, Northeast Ohio Bass Fishing Club, the Pan-Ikarian Brotherhood, a life member of the VFW, a member of the Orwell Rod and Gun Club, one of the founding members of the Jack Space Memorial Bass Tournament and he was an Explorer Scout leader. Upon retirement George and Bea moved to his hometown of Dover. George loved fishing almost as much as he loved his family and his Honey Baby wife, Bea.
Visitation will be Friday, September 29, 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. There will be a Trisagion service Friday at 7:30 pm. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 30, at 11 am in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 364 1st St. SE, Massillon. Interment will be in Dover Burial Park where military rites will be conducted. Following the committal, the Makaria - Mercy Meal will be served in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, 831 Boulevard, Dover.
