George Tubby Phillips

July 11, 1943 — December 27, 2006

George T. “Tubby” Phillips, 63, of Dover, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 11, 1943, at Barnhill, he was the son of the late Lester and Esther Wright Phillips.

He worked for 15 years as a meat cutter for Superior Meats in Massillon.

Tubby was an Army veteran who honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. He was proud to serve as post commander for DAV and was a life member of the New Phila. VFW, Paralyzed American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Newcomerstown American Legion.

He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, and had been a Cub Scout leader, and member of the Midvale Volunteer Fire Department.

Tubby enjoyed being outdoors especially hunting, fishing and camping. He loved his family dearly and always looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren. Though confined to his wheelchair, Tubby made a point to get out and visit with friends and neighbors as much as possible in his unofficial role as “mayor” of the neighborhood.

His wife of 41 years, Dorothy Herman Phillips, survives.

Other surviving members of the family include: a son, Todd (Lisa) Phillips of Dover, daughter, Vernae (Eric) Blackwell of Dover; brother Jerry (Rose “Patty”) Phillips of Barnhill, four grandchildren, Cody, Matthew, Amber, and Nahlana; two cousins who were especially dear, Stevie Lane of North Canton and Joshua Striker; and two “adopted” grandchildren, Chris and Kyle Mears of New Phila.

In addition to his parents, three infant children preceded Tubby in death.

Tubby(TM)s life will be celebrated in an informal gathering to share memories on Sunday, December 31, from 1-4 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, 831 Boulevard, Dover. His comrades from the New Philadelphia VFW will present the family with his flag at 1:00 p.m. Like the picnics and cookouts he was so fond of attending over the years, the rest of the afternoon will be devoted to sharing stories, enjoying the company of friends and family, and having a bite to eat. Casual attire is suggested.

In Lieu of flowers, you can honor Tubby(TM)s life by making a contribution to a benefit account in his name, through the any branch of the Dover-Phila. Federal Credit Union.

The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover is handling the arrangements.
