George W. Daugherty

George W. Daugherty, 91, of 185 Pegasus Dr. N.W., Dover, Ohio died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at Aultman Hospital in Canton following a brief illness.

George retired in 1982 from the Timken Company in New Philadelphia.

Born March 27, 1917 in Proctor, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Ruth (Yoho) Daugherty.

George was an active member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover where he previously served as Trustee and church council. He was a volunteer for Mobile Meals for many years and was a member of the American Legion. He was a talented mechanic having worked on many friends and neighbors cars over the years.

He was honored with both the 22nd annual Robert E. Torgler Award and in 2000, the Zeisberger-Heckewelder Award.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

George is survived by his wife, Norma (Rippel) Daugherty with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage on July 22; He is also survived by his daughter, Peggy (husband, Joe) Erlewine of Wellsburg, West Virginia; four grandchildren Jay (wife, Mindy) Erlewine of Greer, S.C., Tyson (wife, Sheri) Erlewine of Simpsonville, S.C., Erica Elewine of Wellsburg, W.Va., and Eric Erlewine of Abery, Texas; six great grandchildren; a sister, Helen Polen of Dover and a brother Friend Daugherty of Bridgeport, W. Va. Along with many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Stock and four brothers, Lloyd, Clarence, Ray, and Harold Daugherty.

A funeral service celebrating George's life will be held Monday, December 1, 2008 at 11am in the St. John's United Church of Christ at Dover with Rev. Michael Lowry officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Sunday from 2-5pm.
