George W. Walker, 85, a lifelong resident of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, August 25, in Aultman Hospital, Canton, following a brief illness.
Born, May 8, 1924, he was a son of the late Merrill and Irene Stonebrook Walker. George graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1942. During the Second World War, he worked in a local chemical plant and as a guard for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1991 as the owner and operator of the Acme Printing Co., New Philadelphia, a family business founded by his grandfather at the end of the nineteenth century.
George married the former Iris E. Murray on June 8, 1947; the couple reared two sons. He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia for over fifty years, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
In his working years, George enjoyed annual trips to Canada to fish, and in retirement, he and Iris visited all of the forty-eight contiguous United States by car.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Iris, two sons, Stephen L. (Virginia “Jennie”) Walker of Lake Milton, and Brian L. Walker of Dover; two granddaughters, Stephanie (Rick) Watson of Lordstown, and Karen R. Walker of Phoenix, AZ; great-grandchildren, Natalie and David Watson; a brother, Gene (Ruth) Walker of New Philadelphia; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Walker, and by an infant brother.
A funeral service will be held Friday, August 28, at 1:30 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Rev. Kelly P. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park.
