Giuseppe “Joe” Ionno, 86, of Dover, died peacefully Saturday, October 4, 2003 surrounded by his loving family in Union Hospital.
After immigrating to the United States from Italy, he worked for a short time for the former Gray Ford. Later, after many years of service and 70 years of age, he retired from employment with the county, having worked with the Wilkshire Hills Water Department.
Born September 20, 1917 at Faeto, Italy, he was son of the late Antonio & Maria Pasero Ionno.
He spent nine years in the Italian Army either in combat or as a Prisoner of War during World War II.
Joe was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover.
He was a noted green-thumb who was known for his roses, his delicious garden-grown peppers and especially his grapes that he used to make wine. When not working or in the garden, Joe was often spending time with his grandchildren �" each of whom he loved dearly. He was also a big sports fan who loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, and as a young man in Italy he played semi-pro soccer.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Maria D�(TM)Apice Ionno.
Other survivors include: two sons; Tony (Sue Grillon) Ionno of Brewster and Mario (Vickie) Ionno of Dover, a daughter; Anna (Jim) Corey of Dover, eight grandchildren; Anna Marie Ionno of Dover, Brandon Grillon of Brewster, Marlena (Chad) Haney of Uhrichsville, Giuseppe, Michele, Giovanni and Bianca Ionno all of Dover and Wayne Clark of Dover, three great grandchildren; Cody & Corey Haney and Dylan Clark.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by: two daughters; Adele & Marlena Ionno in addition to 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, October 8, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover. Immediately following the burial, a reception will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
