Gladys M. Brown, 73, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Aultman Hospital, Canton, following a long illness.
Born Sept. 9, 1931, on Ninth St. S.W., New Philadelphia, a street where she lived almost her entire life. Gladys was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Byron May Griffin Campbell. She graduated New Philadelphia High School, and was employed by the Timken Roller Bearing Co. and Joy Manufacturing, both of New Philadelphia, and Alsco Aluminum of Sugarcreek. Gladys retired from Atwood Lodge in Dellroy, where she was a banquet hostess for years. She had many fond memories of friends at all of her workplaces.
Gladys was an artist and poet. She enjoyed baking cakes for special occasions, including weddings and birthdays. She baked cakes for residents of nursing homes as well. She loved her family and friends, always was willing to lend a helping hand, and was generous to a fault.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Frank) Harig of Mineral City; three sons, William A. Brown of Canton, Morgan C. Jones of New Philadelphia, and Merle T. (Jenny) Jones of Sarajevo, Bosnia; a stepson, Jon Paul Brown of Sugarcreek; six grandchildren, Laurie L. (Stewart) Johnston, Morgan A. Fisher and Megan D. Jones, all of New Philadelphia, Hannah, Lydia and Luke Jones, all of Bosnia; a great-granddaughter, Hayley L. Johnston of New Philadelphia; brother, Charles G. (Ila) Campbell of New Philadelphia; dear friend, Becky Jones of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse A. Brown, on Jan. 9, 1996; a granddaughter, Carrie Mae Harig; and a grandson, Joshua Crick Jones.
Gladys�(TM) life will be celebrated in a service Sunday, Feb. 20, at 4 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Rev. Glen A. Shedlock officiating.
