Glenn O. Maurer, 78, of Dover, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009, in Union hospital, from complications following heart-bypass surgery in February.
Born February 13, 1931, in Dover, he was a son of the late Earl and Edna Riggenbach Maurer. Glenn graduated from Dover High School, and entered the United States Army. He served honorably during the Korean War where he was involved in front-line combat. Following his service time, he was employed as a machinist at Sparta Manufacturing, and its successor, Fluorocarbon.
Glenn was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, catching turtles, hunting and camping. He liked to garden, growing a variety of vegetables, as well as grapes with which he made wine. Glenn was also mechanically inclined and liked to work on automobiles, and he maintained a golf cart to ride around his property and the neighboring area. He was a member of the Dover Eagles.
Glenn was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Beaber Maurer, whom he married on September 9, 1951; four daughters, Kathy (Paulo) Morris and Judy (Daniel) Troyer, both of Dover, Linda (Steve) Archer of New Philadelphia, and Ida (Tim) Todd of Mineral City; two sons, Dale (Barbara) Maurer of Salem, and Ronald (Shelly) Maurer of Dover; twelve grandchildren, Amy Andrews, Joseph Maurer, Vaiala, Paulo G., Fitimaleula and Kevin Morris, Harriet Patton, Sarah and Billy Archer, Jenny Reynolds, Molly and Ben Maurer; twenty-five great- grandchildren; two sisters, Ida Hearing of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Barbara (Kenny) Sellards of Sherrodsville; three brothers, Jack (Eileen) Maurer and Tom (Nadine) Maurer, both of Dover, and Junior (Mary) Maurer of Dundee; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Lou Maurer, and two brothers, Robert and Fritz Maurer.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, August 16, at 1 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Pastor Lu Ann Youngman of the Winfield United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, where military honors will be presented by the Dover post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Winfield Church.
