H. Eugene Jackson, 68, of Uhrichsville, went home to be with the Lord on May 13, 2005, exactly 17 years to the day when his oldest daughter was struck and killed by lightning.
Eugene was born in Wooster on November 19, 1936. He was raised, for most of his life, in Wayne County where he was active in Cub Scouting and had worked in a variety of places.
In 1982 the Jackson(TM)s came to Tuscarawas County to start a home for women and their children, which they operated in addition to giving out bread products to those in need. Around 1994 Eugene started delivering papers for the Times Reporter, retiring in 2001 after a car accident. A year later, he was diagnosed with Merkle Cell Carcinoma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. They traveled all over Ohio seeking treatment and studies.
Together Eugene and his wife of almost 50 years Nancy, whom he wed on August 16, 1955, raised four lovely daughters and a son. Two of the girls have already gone on and are waiting in Heaven for him, Jeanna, who was killed by lightning and Gerrilynne. Surviving are: daughters, Becky Stepp and her companion Dan, and Etheyl Hritz; and son Rodney (Angela) Jackson. The family was also blessed with: four grandchildren, Charity (Charles) Jones, Kim S. Stepp and companion Travis, Kim A. Kelly, and Dan Lowery and companion Lisa; and 12 great grandchildren who complete the family.
In celebration of Eugene(TM)s life, a public graveside service will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in the New Pittsburg Cemetery outside Wooster with Pastor Larry Hostetler officiating. Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 East High Ave., New Philadelphia, on Monday from 6-8pm.
Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Eugene by visiting the “obituaries link on the funeral home(TM)s website.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Christian Temple, 4249 Belden Drive SE, Uhrichsville 44683.
