H. Philip Seibel II passed away peacefully on March 8th, 2008 with his children at his bedside, after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
He was born in East Orange, New Jersey on April 4th, 1929. In his youth he was a member of the Junior Cavalry Boys' Mounted Troop and worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, part of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal to end the Great Depression. He attended the Randolph Macon and Newark Academies, and later Ursinus College where he met the love of his life, Maxine. After graduating from Ursinus with a degree in business administration, he served in the U.S. Marines for three years. In 1954 he married Maxine and several years later they started their family. Mr. Seibel was employed in the steel industry and in 1973 he moved to Tuscarawas County with his family to serve as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Greer Steel in Dover. Phil and Maxine loved antiques and started their own business, Green Pond Antiques, in their retirement years.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Dorothy Seibel, his sister and brother, Arlene and Robert Seibel, and his son Mark.
He is survived by his wife; Maxine, Maxine's sister, Mildred and her family, his daughter, Cindy (Bob) and son, Phil (Gerardo), grandchildren Jacob and Jackie, and special great-nephew Alex.
Phil loved meeting people and developed a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Tuscarawas County and at the Merriman Retirement Community where he spent his final years. One of his last wishes was to express his gratitude to all those in the Bolivar area who cared for and supported Maxine and him. He also expressed his appreciation for the staff at the Merriman, who became like a family to him. The family would like to thank Hospice of Summa and the Acute Palliative Care Unit at Akron City Hospital, whose staff sent him on his final journey with comfort and dignity.
A celebration of Phil's life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 11:00 am at Trinity Episcopal Church, 122 Third St. N.W. in New Philadelphia, with Father Paul Johansen officiating. Burial will follow in Dover Burial Park. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, March 14, 2008 from 5-9 pm.
