H. Leroy Abel, 74, of Dover, Ohio died Thursday, November 4, 2004 in Union Hospital following a brief illness. He and his wife, Lois spent their winters in Holiday, Florida since 1993.
Leroy was a truck driver for most of his life and was a member of Teamsters Local #92 in Canton. He retired in 1992 from A. J. Weigand Tank Lines at Dover where he worked since 1951.
Born February 23, 1930 in New Rumley, Ohio, he was the son of the late Byron and Beatrice Blackwell Abel.
He was a Life Member of the Dover Eagles Lodge and member of the Dover Moose Lodge. He was a Social Member of the Dover VFW and Army Navy Club. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. His favorite times were supporting his grandchildren during their athletic activities. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast where he enjoyed racing Indian motorcycles and acquired the first 1948 Harley Davidson motorcycle in Tuscarawas County. He had been a member of the Yellow Jackets and Tuscateers Motorcycle Clubs. His family also enjoyed camping at Clendening and Atwood Lakes. He had also formerly been an avid bowler.
In addition to his wife, Lois Lantzer Abel with whom he would have celebrated 56 years of marriage on Nov. 12, he is survived by his son, Terry L. Abel and fiancé Marjorie Slemmer of Dover and her daughter, Jessica; three grandchildren, Todd (Jill) Abel of Dover, Airman 1st Class Brian Abel who is stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas and Merry Greco (Ryan) Philibrick of Portland, Oregon; three great grandchildren Cory and Kyle Abel and Elaina Philabrick.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, November 8, 2004 at 10am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover with Rev. Steve Daniels officiating. At his request, cremation will follow services. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 pm.
