Harper W. Froman, 89, of the Morning View Care Center and formerly of Tremont St., Dover, Ohio died Wednesday, March 4, 2003 following a brief illness.
Born January 13, 1914 in Strasburg, Ohio, he was the son of the late Oliver J. and Ida B. Baker Froman.
On April 2, 1939, he married Lenora Pauline “Polly” Bost from Statesville, North Carolina, a marriage that lasted 64 loving years. They had no children.
In addition to his wife, Pauline, a resident of Park Village Health Care Center in Dover, he is survived by a niece, Barbara McGriff of Jacksonville, Florida. Pauline�(TM)s sister and a nephew from Maryland also survive.
A 1931 graduate of Strasburg High School, he graduated from the University Conservatory of Music and immediately joined the United States Navy Band in Washington D.C., where he assumed the position of Solo Clarinetist, a position he held until his retirement in 1955. He was also a faculty member of the Navy School of Music at the same time.
Upon his retirement from the navy, he became the band director at Uhrichsville High School. He was also the concert band director at Claymont until his retirement in 1971. He was music director of the former Dover Concert Band and played clarinet for the Canton Symphony Orchestra. He also repaired band instruments.
Mr. Froman was a member of Eastern Star Lodge #222 at New Philadelphia and Dover Lodge #59 F&AM.
He was a member of the St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ in Dover.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 17, 2003 at 11 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover with Pastor Amy Joy Prather officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2-4 pm where Masonic services will be held at 1:45 pm.
