Harry E. Dunkle, 89, of Stone Creek, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born, Jul. 14, 1919, in Uhrichsville, Harry was a son of the late Michael and Bessie DeVault Dunkle. He attended Uhrichsville High School, and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Montana. For years, Harry was the sale manager for Beitner Tire in Dover, and he later owned and operated his own business, Swiss Tire, in Ragersville.
In his youth, Harry belonged to the First Christian Church in Uhrichsville. He was former member of both the Elks and Moose Lodges, both at Dover.
Harry very much enjoyed the game of golf and going bowling. He was also fond of garage sales, watches and clocks, and tinkering. He liked game shows especially watching the Game Show Channel, and was a great fan of NASCAR. Harry loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and time spent with them.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Ruth Strickmaker Dunkle, whom he married on his birthday in 1940; a son, Gary (Cheryl) Dunkle of Stone Creek; two grandchildren, Michael (Jerri) Dunkle of New Philadelphia, and Christine (Paul) Parrish of Port Washington; four great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Nicole Dunkle, and Haley and Heather Parrish; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by six sisters, Erma Barr, Cathryn Clemens, Mary Long, Edith Hines, Clara Dunkle and Betty Jane Smith; three brothers, Charles, Delbert and Clarence Dunkle (Clarence was killed in France during the Second World War).
Family and friends are invited to attend a service honoring Harry and for the committal of his cremated remains on Monday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m., in Dover Burial Park. Hospice Chaplain Rick Brinsley will officiate. Immediately following the service, the family will host a meal in the Toland-Herzig-Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
