Harry W. Poff

March 4, 1913 — June 24, 2006

Harry W. Poff, 93, of Dover, and a longtime Steubenville resident, died Saturday, June 24, 2006 in the Park Village Health Care Center.

He was born March 4, 1913 at Shadyside, the son of the late Harry C. & Mary Belle Thomas Poff.

For 42 years, Harry was a hard working business owner, first with the Harry Poff Service Station in Steubenville, and following a brief retirement, later joining into a partnership to form Moore & Poff Standard Oil in Cadiz.

Harry was the consummate outdoorsman. He loved camping, whether locally or on one of his storied camping adventures in Alaska. He also found refuge from hard work at a variety of favorite fishing spots. Often his catch would make for great dinners for all to share on his camping outings.

The values of faith and service also helped to shape Harry(TM)s character. He was a longtime member of the Buena Vista Methodist Church at Steubenville, and after moving to the area became a member of New Philadelphia(TM)s First Christian Church. He was a member of Lodge #45 F & AM and the Scottish Rite at Steubenville. He also logged hundreds of volunteer hours at Steubenville(TM)s Trinity Hospitals.

For 71 years, Harry was blessed to be sharing his life with his adoring wife, Dorothy Schoen Poff, who survives. The two were married on December 7, 1934. Their lives together were filled with family, fun, and travel.

Other surviving family members include: two daughters, Judy (Carl) Bell of Dover and Marsha (Richard) Montgomery of Hartville; four grandchildren, Scott (Nancy) Bell of Dover, Kelly (Mike) Wood of Lynchburg, VA, Nancy (Mark) Byrd, and Julie (Scott) Aten, both of Hartville; 10 great grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Hicks of Jacksonville, FL.

In addition to his parents, a sister, Vivian, preceded Harry in death.

Jim Borton will officiate a service that celebrates Harry(TM)s life on Wednesday, June 28, at 12:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church at New Philadelphia. Immediately following the service, a meal will be served in the church(TM)s fellowship hall. Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday one-hour prior to services.

Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Harry by visiting the obituaries link on the funeral home(TM)s website.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to, the Salvation Army, Public Square, Dover, or to the Urban Mission, 301 N. 5th St., Steubenville, 43952.
