Longtime Strasburg resident, Hazel R. Lewis, 90, died Friday, April 17, 2009, in the Park Village Health Care Center.
She was born October 18, 1918 at Bolivar to Earl & Beulah Keller Roush. Beulah died when her children were very young, and Earl later wed the former Grace Yackey "Grandma Roush," who also preceded Hazel in death.
Hazel spent most of her time caring for the family home, but, like so many Strasburg residents of her generation, also spent a period of time working at the Garver Brothers Store. She was a 1936 graduate of Strasburg High School and member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church. She served as church treasurer for many years and was also treasurer and past president of the Otterbein class. Hazel also enjoyed the time she spent as a Tiger Band Booster, and, fittingly, was treasurer of that group as well.
On June 13, 1937, Hazel married the love of her life, Algie D. Lewis. The two celebrated 61 years of marriage before his passing on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1998.
She will be missed by a large family that survives her including: three daughters, Beulah (Bill) Hensel of Strasburg, Dorothy (Tom) Tonn of Massillon, and Gloria (Bob) Wentling of Navarre; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Lewis of Dover; two sisters, Marian (Pete) Angelo of Strasburg and Irene Hartline of Beach City; two brothers, Bob Roush of New Philadelphia and Rev. Dean (Barbara) Roush of Hilliard; 13 loving grandchildren, Brinda (Todd) Grimm, Bethany (Tony) Vallos, Jon (Loraine) Fishel, Joel (Karen) Fishel, Sheila (Ryan) Knopf, Jennifer (Paul) Schultz, Leanna Lewis and her companion Chase Tennant, Laurinda Lewis, Gomer D. Lewis, II, Bill (Jennifer) Wentling, Rick (Katie) Wentling, Pam (Mike) Haley, and Andy Wentling; and 21 great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by: a son, Gomer Lewis, granddaughter, Connie Jean Wentling, and two brothers, Wayne & Blake Roush.
Rev. Lynda K. Masters will officiate a service that celebrates Hazel's life on Tuesday, April 21, at 11:00 a.m. in the Strasburg United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. Friends may call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Monday from 6-9 p.m.
Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Hazel by visiting the "obituaries" link on the funeral home's website.
The family suggests that memorial gifts be made in Hazel's name, to the Strasburg United Methodist Church, 206 2nd St NW, Strasburg, Ohio 44680.
